In the wake of the devastation of AIDS, the grandmothers of Africa are carrying the continent on their shoulders; they care for their orphaned grandchildren and those of their neighbours, and oftentimes driving the economy. To support these courageous women, grandmothers across Canada are raising money, facilitated by The Stephen Lewis Foundation.
This Tuesday, March 20th, the grandmothers of Winnipeg are hosting a potluck dinner, to raise funds for the plight of their African counterparts. It is being held at the Augustine United Church, 444 River Ave., at 6 pm. The cost is $10 plus an item for the potluck, and tickets are available by emailing Barb, at barbf@miiic.ca.
The grandmothers of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre in South Africa wish they could be here, but have sent their “Little Travellers” to attend on their behalves. Little Travellers will be available for purchase for $5 each, all of which will go towards supporting families affected by AIDS – most of the beaders are “Gogos” (grandmothers) that are supporting large families of orphans on the income from this project).
